What Time to Start a Mount Batur Jeep Sunrise Tour?

Hi, I’m Oka, a local private driver and tour operator with Book Trip Bali. From my experience taking clients from Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu to Mount Batur, I recommend starting the trip at around 1:30 AM.

Why so early? The drive from these areas to Mount Batur takes around 2 hours. Leaving at 1:30 AM gives us enough time to travel comfortably, arrive around 3:30–3:45 AM, meet the local Jeep driver, and start the Jeep tour at around 4:00 AM.

I recently used this timing with Mr. Liam and his family from South Korea, who were staying in the Seminyak area. We started from Seminyak at 1:30 AM, and I want to share their real experience to show you how I normally arrange a Mount Batur Sunrise Jeep Tour for my clients.

My Real Experience mount batur jeep adventure With Mr. Liam’s Family

Mr. Liam and his family were staying in Seminyak and wanted to experience the Mount Batur sunrise by Jeep. Because they were coming from Seminyak, I recommended a 1:30 AM pickup. We didn’t want to make the journey too tight. The early departure gave us enough time to travel comfortably and arrive at Mount Batur before the Jeep tour started. We arrived at the meeting point around 3:30–3:45 AM. I had already coordinated with the local Jeep driver, so the family did not need to worry about finding their Jeep or wondering who would pick them up.

After meeting the Jeep driver, we started the Jeep trip at around 4:00 AM. There is no need to rush a sunrise experience.

Jeep Mount Batur Sunrise Jeep Timing for Pick Up

Here is the schedule I normally recommend:

The exact timing can vary depending on your hotel location, road conditions, weather and the sunrise time on your travel date.

1:30 AM — Pick Up From Seminyak, Kuta or Canggu

For clients staying in these areas, 1:30 AM is the timing I normally prefer. The journey is around 2 hours, but I always prefer having some extra time rather than arriving late. Starting early means we can travel at a more relaxed pace and have some buffer if the road takes longer than expected. My priority is simple: get my clients to Mount Batur on time without rushing them.

3:30–3:45 AM — Arrive at the Jeep Meeting Point

When we arrive at Mount Batur, the next step is meeting the local Jeep driver. This is something I coordinate before the tour. You don’t have to worry about:

“Who is our Jeep driver?”

“Which Jeep should we take?”

“Where do we meet?”

I already have contact with the local Jeep team. This helps us avoid a random driver or random Jeep situation.

Around 4:00 AM — Start the Jeep Tour

Around 4:00 AM, you meet your Jeep driver and start heading toward the Mount Batur sunrise point. The Jeep takes you through the volcanic landscape while it is still dark.

Around 5:30 AM — Arrive at the Sunrise Point

We aim to reach the sunrise point around 5:30 AM. You then have time to prepare your phone or camera, relax, and find a comfortable position before sunrise.

Around 6:00 AM — Sunrise + Photos

Sunrise time changes depending on the date, but it is generally around 6:00 AM. The Jeep driver can also help you take photos and videos. You can use your own phone and simply ask the driver: “Can you take some photos for us?” Don’t be shy about asking for more photos or different angles. If our team has an iPhone available, we can also help use it to capture photos and videos. This is part of the local touch we want to provide.

What Time Should You Leave From Ubud?

If you are staying in Ubud, the pickup time can be later because Ubud is much closer to Mount Batur than Seminyak, Kuta or Canggu. For my clients staying in Ubud, I normally recommend a 3:00 AM pickup. The schedule would be approximately:

3:00 AM — Pick up from your hotel in Ubud

Around 4:00 AM — Arrive at the Mount Batur Jeep meeting point

Around 4:00 AM — Meet the Jeep driver and start the Jeep tour

Around 5:30 AM — Arrive at the sunrise point
↓
Around 6:00 AM — Sunrise + photos and videos

The exact timing can vary depending on where your hotel is located in Ubud, road conditions, weather and the sunrise time on your travel date.

If you are staying in Ubud, 3:00 AM is the pickup time I recommend so we have enough time to arrive before the Jeep starts and enjoy the sunrise without rushing.

After sunrise, you can choose how much of Mount Batur you want to explore.

Short Trip

Mount Batur Sunrise → Meeting Point, Best if sunrise is your main goal and you want to continue with another activity afterward.

Medium Trip

Mount Batur Sunrise → Black Lava OR Black Sand → Meeting Point, A good option if you want to see another volcanic landscape after sunrise.

Long Trip

Mount Batur Sunrise → Black Lava → Black Sand → Meeting Point, Best if you want more time to explore and take photos.
